I really like Lauren Fleshman. Pro-runner, entrepreneur, mom, wife, friend, blah blah blah. She is very poignant and honest in her blog posts, interviews, and media sayings, making herself vulnerable and really putting it out on the table. She recently posted something about #keepingitreal for people (see article here) that was part of the domino effect of this other post that had kind of gone viral. She posted some fancy modeling pictures and then put up some "real life" pictures. She had a baby 4? months before the modeling and her pictures showed what it looks like when you aren't all made-up and tanned and etc. It was awesome that she was so willing to put it all out there. I won't bore you with all of the details, but her challenge to people is to appreciate your body for all that it does, rather than what it looks like, telling people to post unflattering pictures (and hey, runners are GREAT at taking unflattering pictures - if you look like photogenic guy when you're running, you aren't going fast enough) on social media with the hashtag, "keepingitreal", so that we can all see "real" people and the truth behind what the 99% of the world who aren't models look like (aka beautiful!). You might think that you look and feel like shit, but your body is still chugging through.

So the Olympics are on. Have you heard? It's been nothing but snow, slush, ice, etc. And it's sort of funny talking to people, because some people don't watch the Olympics as it's "not their thing" or they aren't into winter sports or are tired of snowboarding. And some people love it - they share the same adrenaline rush that the Olympians get hurling themselves at crazy downhills and throwing themselves into the air or find the ice skating really beautiful. My family and I were discussing some of the American "disappointments" this evening, and I hate talks framed like that because who are we to judge? These athletes made it to the freaking Olympics and did really well; just not well enough to get the medal. They are still the top athletes in the world. What could be better than that? I think it's a little ironic that Sochi or ("Seww-chi", according to one of my patients at work) has been warmer than it is on the east coast. I yearn for a day over 35 degrees (Farenheit, that is; Celsius would be insanely warm). I hear that it's making the conditions a bit rough and that might be affecting the outcome of a few of the events, which sucks, obviously, but every athlete there has to deal with that. The ones who keep their cool and adapt to things will be the ones who come out on top. You learn that a lot with running, especially cross country races. I raced this one memorable race in a blizzard, a conference championship, and I thought it embodied what cross country was/should be. The conditions sucked, it was a hilly course, and everyone had to deal with it. It became a mental game since the playing field, per se, was leveled. And that's what the Olympics are about, adapting and rolling with the flow. So step up to the plate, kids! Side note: The story of the Canadian coach helping the Russian skier was AMAZING. This is the DEFINITION of the Olympics. LOVE love love. (If you missed it...) It's been very wintry here, though, and it's making me feel a little bit of cabin fever. I'm usually really good with getting my running in and keeping my spirits up during the winter (hello, I went to a school named "Frostburg" for my undergrad + Master's), but this winter, for whatever reason, has been a bit more challenging...I feel a bit like the image below...(does it make sense in you?) Some days I feel like I'm going a little crazy, and I tend to think too much. And I find that the only thing that has been comforting me lately is the tv show, Dexter. Yes, I missed the band wagon on that one since the show ended a little bit ago, but Netflix just got it! Should I get concerned that I'm currently most comforted by a tv show about a serial killer that kills serial killers/criminals? goldfishswedishfishbiscotti |
